| Monte Alban is a Zapotec site outside of Oaxaca. It is situated on a mountainside and thus there are spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. It is thought that Monte Alban was the site of a confederacy as there has been elements of several different cultures unearthed there. The main ceremonial centre is impressively laid out, almost like a military review parade ground. There are also some very interesting carvings of misshapen people propped up against one of the structures off the right of the picture - whether they were curiosities for the inhabitants or whether it denotes a hospital, nobody knows. As with a lot of the archaelogical sites, a vast amount of it is still unexcavated. |
