| From Palenque we travelled overland to San Cristobal de las Casas. The bus journey was stomach churning, and to make it worse, the bus drivers seem to favour loud techno music to accompany the radical driving. You have been warned! San Cristobal is just lovely - beautiful cobblestone streets and colonial architecture everywhere. We stayed in the Posada San Cristobal, which was a renovated colonial house with a fantastic interior courtyard with an internal wide wooden balcony running the length of the second floor. Even better, they know their coffee in San Cristobal and we were in heaven making regular pilgrimages to coffee establishments throughout the day. The climate is a lot more comfortable in San Cristobal too - still sunny, but the air is fresh and cool with none of the oppressive humidity of Palenque. This is the imposing facade of one of the churches in town. In its grounds is an extensive market. You WILL be hassled to buy stuff if you go within 10 metres of the place. We went and saw a live band one evening - these guys were really goin' off! The oddest part was the dummer doing a cow-bell solo to a song that sounded suspiciously like 'Land Downunder' (lyrics in Espanol, so can't be sure) - you just had to be there |
