Bonampak
Wow! The temple at Bonampak is divided into 3 rooms, all of which are richly painted on every surface. The colours and the artwork are stunning because all that is left of the other Mayan sites are the (unpainted) stonework edifices and stelae - here you get an idea of how the other temples and pyramids would have looked at their peak. Due to a set of freak conditions, a protective layer of calcite formed over the murals over the centuries. Unfortunately, after they were re-discovered, attempts were made to 'clean' them which resulted in damage to the colours.
