| We flew direct from Havana to Merida to kick off our 4 or 5 weeks around Mexico. Merida is a largish city on the Yucatan peninsula, well situated for visiting several of the Mayan sites like Uxmal. A word of warning if you don't have your own transport - pay close attention to the bus timetables (if you can work out all the consfusing and conflicting info). We got to Uxmal OK, but we spent about 2 hours standing in pouring rain waiting for a bus to come. We wound up hitching a ride to Muna and waiting another 1/2hr for a bus which was packed to the rafters. Another word of warning - Mexican buses are either hot as hell or air conditioned to artic temperatures! Anyway, back to Uxmal: the picture shows the House of the Sorcerer with the steps of the House of the Governor in the foreground. This was our first Mayan ruin, so we wandered around pretty uninformed for most of the time. The site museum is small and doesn't have anything in English. |
